Our Unistrut P1001 Channel Featured In The Winning Design!

Focused on promoting environmental and economic awareness, the City of Dreams Pavilion Design Competition features architectural designs that are made from repurposed materials in an attempt to reduce waste during both the construction and de-installation of the work. The idea is to make people more aware of a declining world that continues to face depletion of economic and natural resources as well as bring architecture and design communities together.

In 2018, the winning design, Oculi, featured Unistrut P1001 double channel and bases that came from Eberl Iron Works.

Our Unistrut Buffalo Supports division was contacted by a group of faculty members from Cornell University who were looking for P1001 back-to-back Unistrut channel that they could use in the prototype of their design. The order consisted of:

• (160) 20 foot lengths of P1001 Unistrut Double Channel and
• (6) P2073 Unistrut Post Bases

Once they received the order for their double strut channel, they went to work building the prototype of Oculi, which would eventually go on to win the 2018 competition.

How Unistrut P1001 Helped Shape "Oculi"

Made from repurposed metal grain bins, Unistrut P1001 Channel and Unistrut Post Bases, Oculi brought back memories of the American Agro-Industrial Age by creating a design that provided an unobstructed view of the sky while also tracking the path of the sun.

The four winning faculty members captured the eye of the City of Dreams judges by creating a piece of art that focused on sustainability-oriented thinking and helped raise awareness of a world that is facing increasing environmental and economic constraints. Oculi was installed on Governors Island, in New York City, after winning the 2018 competition and was de-installed later that year.
