Unistrut Threaded Rod Connection
Connecting Threaded Rod to Unistrut Channel 4 Ways
- Fixed
- Through Channel
- Hanging
- Angled Hanging
Below, we'll go over in a little more detail, the four most common ways (mentioned above) to correctly attach threaded rod to Unistrut channel to form a safe, secure connection.
Threaded Rod Fixed Connection to Unistrut Channel
The fixed connection method involves the use of a channel nut, square washer and hex nut. The underturned edge of the Unistrut channel is sandwiched between the interior channel nut and the exterior washer, the threaded rod is inserted through both and then fixed in place with a hex nut. The rod enters through the open face of the channel but does not extend to, or through, the back wall of the channel.
A slightly modifed version of the fixed method involves the use of a Kwik-Washer, which replaces the channel nut and washer. It uses one less piece of connection hardware, simplifying the process for a faster, easier connection that can be accomplished with one hand.

Threaded Rod Connection Through Unistrut Channel
The through connection method involves the use of two square washers and two hex nuts. The strut channel is sandwiced by the two sqaure washers, followed by the hex nuts.
The threaded rod passes through everything, including the open face of the channel and the back side of the channel, opposite the open side. This method works best with slotted channel, so there is no need to drill any holes to allow for threaded rod to pass through.

Threaded Rod Hanging Connection Beneath Unistrut Channel
In the hanging connection method, threaded rod is not attached directly to the channel. A Unistrut u bracket, such as a P1047 or P1737, is attached to the underside of the channel and the threaded rod is attached to the u bracket. The rod hangs below the underside of the channel.
The hanging method involves a u bracket (and the hardware to connect it to the Unistrut channel: channel nuts or spring nuts and hex head cap screws), two flat washers, and two hex nuts.
The flat washers, which are in place to keep the hex nuts from being able to fit through the hole in the u bracket, are only needed if the size of the threaded rod is less than 1/2". The middle hole of the u bracket is sandwiched by flat washers, which are held in place by hex nuts and the threaded rod goes through everything.

Threaded Rod Angled Hanging Connection Beneath Unistrut Channel
The angled hanging connection method is very similar to the hanging connection method, but is used when the channel is not perpedicular to the ground, so that the rod can hang in a vertical position, no matter what angle the channel is at.
This can be most easily and cost effectively achieved through the use of a pair of 90 degree brackets, such as the Unistrut P1068.
A channel nut and hex bolt are used to connect one of the ninety degree angle brackets to the underside of the Unistrut channel and the second L bracket is connected to the first with a hex bolt and hex nut, then the threaded rod is inserted through the remaing hole of the second L bracket and held in place with a hex nut on either side of the hole.
